Price Shoppers vs. Value Buyers: The Fork in the Road for MSPs

Price Shoppers vs. Value Buyers: The Fork in the Road for MSPs
The Fork in the Road for MSPs

(and the Businesses They Serve)

A post from Robin Robins this week got me thinking about something I see play out over and over in our industry.

There are two very different types of buyers in the market for IT services:

  • The price shopper
  • The value buyer

They may sound similar on the surface. Both want “IT support.” Both want things to work. Both want to feel safe.

But they are making completely different decisions.

Price shoppers are buying a transaction. “Who can do this the cheapest?” “Can I get the same thing for less?” “Just keep it running.”

Value buyers are buying leadership. “Who is thinking about risk?” “Who is designing this for where we’re going?” “Who is accountable for the direction of our technology?”

That distinction matters far more than most business owners realize.

One of the critiques raised is that some people argue you can’t “sell outcomes” because you can’t promise zero risk. That’s fair. You can’t guarantee a business will never have a breach, an outage, or an incident.

But outcomes aren’t about guarantees. They’re about ownership.

Every business decision carries risk. Marketing campaigns fail. New hires don’t work out. Equipment breaks. Markets shift. Technology is no different.

What serious operators are really buying is confidence that someone is thinking ahead, reducing exposure, and building an environment where problems are:

  • Less likely
  • Less damaging
  • Faster to recover from

That is an outcome.

The fork in the road happens when a business evaluates an MSP and asks the wrong question.

Price shoppers ask: “How much per user?”

Value buyers ask: “What happens when something goes wrong?” “How are you reducing my risk over time?” “Who is guiding this, not just fixing it?”

The MSP you choose shapes your posture as a business.

One path leads to reactive support, technical debt, surprise emergencies, and constant friction around cost. It feels cheaper until it isn’t.

The other path leads to intentional design, clearer priorities, fewer surprises, and a partner who is thinking about continuity, security, and growth alongside you.

Neither path is “wrong.” But they are very different futures.

And for business operators, understanding that difference may be one of the most important decisions you make when choosing an MSP.
